Events
These are the years when children begin to ask bigger questions and take bigger steps.
Bay Farm’s Elementary I program gives students in Grades 1–3 the space, structure, and support to grow into confident, capable learners. Through hands-on academics and real-world connections, students develop independence, purpose, and a deep love of learning.
A Foundation That Lasts
Elementary I builds on the Montessori foundation established in early childhood while adapting to each child’s growing curiosity and ability. In our mixed-age classrooms, students work at their own pace, pursue their interests, and begin to take ownership of their time and learning.
They develop core academic skills across:
-
Language: reading, writing, grammar, and communication
-
Math: from concrete materials to early abstraction
-
Science: biology, botany, chemistry, and physical science
-
Cultural Studies: history, geography, and world cultures
-
Spanish language learning
-
Visual and performing arts
-
Outdoor education and nature exploration
Learning by Doing
Bay Farm’s classrooms are filled with movement, collaboration, and exploration. Students are free to choose their work within a structured, purposeful environment that encourages responsibility and creativity.
Common experiences include:
-
Solving math problems with Montessori bead chains
-
Writing and illustrating original books
-
Researching animals and building habitat dioramas
-
Studying weather patterns and planting in our school gardens
-
Performing in class plays and musical presentations
-
Exploring the woods during outdoor learning sessions
This hands-on, integrated approach creates lasting understanding, and a deep joy in learning.
Social Growth, Side by Side
The Elementary I years are a key time for social development. Our multi-age classrooms help students learn from and support one another, practicing important skills like:
-
Conflict resolution
-
Self-regulation and focus
-
Collaboration and teamwork
-
Respect for differences
-
Taking initiative and responsibility
Through daily community meetings, peer partnerships, and shared responsibilities, children learn how to navigate relationships and contribute to a positive classroom culture.
Ready for What’s Next
By the end of Grade 3, students are confident, curious learners who are ready to take on the deeper academic challenges and leadership opportunities of our Elementary II program (Grades 4–6). They’ve built not just knowledge, but the mindset and skills to keep growing with purpose.
