Specialist Programs

Integrated into every day.

Bay Farm's specialist programs are fully integrated into our curriculum. Specialists work alongside classroom teachers, so lessons are cohesive across the classroom, the art studio, and the garden, and children deepen their understanding by experiencing each concept in different ways. Each child meets these programs at a level that fits their development, gaining skills and ways of expressing themselves that reach beyond the traditional classroom.

Students doing a science experiment
Molly DeRocha · Children's House – Grade 6

Science

In science, students ask questions and test their ideas through hands-on experiments and close observation. Our youngest scientists explore the natural world with their senses, while older students design their own investigations, record what they find, and connect it to the work happening in their classrooms. Each fall, students share their discoveries with our community at the STEAM Fair.

Students building projects in the maker space
Kindergarten – Grade 6

Design Thinking

In our maker space, students become designers, builders, and inventors, blending science, art, and agriculture into one creative design process. They have designed new insect species from clay, imagined gardens to grow food on the Moon, modeled terrace farming in the Andes with marble runs for waterways, and built barn prototypes to withstand hurricanes. Along the way, students learn to embrace failure, learn from it, and try again.

Students in the Bay Farm agriculture program
Evelyn Golden · Children's House – Grade 6

Agriculture

Our integrated agriculture program, led by 2025 Agricultural Teacher of the Year Evelyn Golden, gets students outside and working with real animals and plants. Children care for our goats and alpaca and tend the garden beds and apple orchard, watching life cycles play out across the seasons. Visit The Farm →

Students in music class with Grace Coberly
Grace Coberly · Toddler House – Grade 6

Music & Performing Arts

Drawing from both the Montessori philosophy and Orff Schulwerk, our Performing Arts program prepares students for a lifetime of joyful, communal artistry. Students explore music, movement, and theatre, working toward mastery of the concepts within each art form and using what they learn to create and perform original work for their community. Along the way, they find their footing as performers on their own terms.

Students working on art projects
Julie Hawkins · Children's House – Grade 6

Art

Students work with pencil, paint, clay, wood, cardboard, and more, exploring a wide range of techniques. They learn to appreciate the creativity of others and explore other cultures through their art.

Students in physical education class
Ned Martin · Kindergarten – Grade 6

Physical Education

Physical education at Bay Farm focuses on movement, healthy habits, and a lifelong appreciation for our bodies and what they can do. Students build coordination and confidence through games and teamwork, with more PE time beginning in Kindergarten.

The Bay Farm library
Toddler House – Grade 6

Library

New this fall, our Library is the heart of this curiosity-filled community. Students explore quality literature, gather for story hours, and build library and research skills that support independent learning.

The performances helped me tremendously with my confidence level on stage and in everyday life.
